Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to develop a well-rounded musician with a sustained love for learning and growth. By providing a strong musical foundation, students will be able to use their musical talents with aplomb.

As a mentor, I aim to inspire and equip students with the necessary tools to become confident pianists. Developing a healthy and reliable piano technique is essential and will empower students to enjoy piano playing without the risk of pain or injury. Through the integration of theory, ear training, and historical context, students will gain a deeper understanding and connection to their music. Together, we will embark on an engaging and dynamic journey, where every lesson brings fulfillment, creativity, and the independence to make music a lifelong passion.

Every student is unique, and my goal as a mentor is to nurture individuality and adapt to different learning styles for their success. Music is a powerful tool for self-expression, and my goal is to help students discover their unique musical voice. By building a strong technique, musicianship, and theoretical knowledge, students will feel empowered to grow into confident and expressive musicians.

Why study piano?

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” -Plato

Learning how to play the piano at a young age has been a staple in households across the globe for quite some time. Learning the piano has many benefits for the whole human being backed by science, such as:

  1. Learning how to play the piano helps improve the navigation of the body. The student develops specific muscles and coordination by using arms, hands, feet, and eyes simultaneously.

  2. Practicing piano regularly as a child also influences structural changes in the brain. These include an increased spatial-temporal ability by activating parts of the brain a person uses when he or she does math and reasoning, and a more symmetrical central nervous system because of the equal development of both hands. It also improves memory by developing good habits such as focus, diligence, and creativity. It has been shown that individuals who had early musical training had better memory retention later in their lives.

  3. Studying piano music encourages creativity. On top of all the complexities of the instrument, playing the piano requires creativity in terms of making sense of what is composed and interpreting it. Learning music is like learning a new language with all its intricacies, nuances, and organization.

  4. Mastery of musical pieces can boost confidence. The ability to perform a memorized piece in front of other people and the excitement of conquering a what used to be difficult piece can help an individual feel good about one’s self.

  5. Lastly, piano playing can be a good stress reliever. It can lessen anxiety by making you focus on the piece and the music over other stress factors. It has also been used as a form of therapy for individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder.[1]
